Here are three simple pitching machine hitting drills to improve performance:

Strike Zone Consistency

This is a simple but highly effective drill that builds hitting confidence as well as ability. First, set your pitching machine to a speed that matches your or your player’s ability. Next, adjust the machine to deliver pitches into the center of the strike zone. Then, the hitter should focus on making clean, consistent, contact for approximately ten pitches, or however many you decide. Finally, once hitting consistency is maintained, set the machine to pitch in different areas of the strike zone.

This drill refines swing mechanics and builds up muscle memory while improving strike zone consistency.

Line Drive Contest

This is a great drill to improve a batter’s ability to hit consistent line drives and can be used with multiple players in a team environment. This drill should take place in a batting cage or a designated hitting area. First, use cones to mark areas where scoring line drives are usually hit. Next, adjust the speed on the machine to match the batter’s ability. Then, have the batters take turns hitting balls pitched by the pitching machine with the focus on hitting as many line drives into the marked area as possible. Rotate hitters after every ten pitches and take down scores to keep things competitive.

Speed Increase

This progressive hitting drill is great for players of all ages to get ahead of their peers by being able to adjust to higher velocity pitches. Begin by setting the pitching machine to a low speed, around 35-40 mph (can be lower for younger players so choose speed based on ability). Then after every five successful hits, increase the speed by 5 mph. Keep increasing until the batter reaches a level where they are no longer comfortable.

This drill is excellent for improving reaction time as well as building confidence against faster pitching speeds.

These drills do not need to be limited to a batting cage, although a cage is strongly recommended for practice at higher speeds. If a cage is not available and you do not have access to a wall socket, you can use a portable battery-powered pitching machine or a manual pitching machine, though this will typically mean lower speeds.
